WHO WAS THE QUEEN D. MARIA II?
history remembers queen d. maria ii of portugal as “the good mother” or “the educator”, but often leaves out the unusual tenderness that shaped her heart. she was an extremely devoted mother, and a strong believer of the importance of a well-rounded education for her children.
She married King D. Fernando II, after two unsuccessful marriages, and shared with him the passion for education, which was passed on to their offspring. Reigning in a politically controversial time, right after a consuming civil war, she sought shelter in corresponding with her cousin, Queen Victoria of England.
Well-loved by her subjects, she died giving birth to her 11th child at the age of 35, leaving behind a trail of grief, as well as her oldest son to reign with just 16 years old. Her kindness, compassion and sheer concern for people deeply touched D. Pedro V, who took those traits with him and made them the cornerstone of his future reign.
